3 Tips to Get Around Writers Block!

Updated: Oct 3, 2021

There is nothing more frustrating for a writer than sitting at your laptop notebook or typewriter with no ideas coming to you. The coffees gone cold and the head bobbing George Michael figure is looking at you in disgust. Trust me, I feel your pain. I may not be able to give you the solutions but what I can do is give you a few tips on what helps me personally and see if they work for you!

Tip No.1 - Walk Away

I know it seems counter intuitive, but forcing yourself to write when you simply can't is only going to make you more frustrated with the process. Walking away from the screen is the first step to rediscovering you're writing. If I feel at any kind of stumbling block with my creativity, I move. Go for a stroll around the block, limber up with some exercises even, anything that'll get the blood flowing usually helps with brain productivity.

Tip No.2 - Write and Give Yourself Options

So, this tip may sound like I'm just being a hypocrite but writing yourself out of a slump can work! I usually have two or three small projects I can turn to if I am really stuck with something. I keep the projects varied too, so for example I'd have a blog post and a short story all at the ready just in case I've hit a wall with my novel. Have around two or three small projects at hand will help you find motivation and inspiration for your work. Also, even though having a varied choice helps, be wary of giving yourself too much choice as you may just end up overwhelming yourself. The key here is Balance.

Tip No.3 - Be Kind!

In my opinion the most important tip of all. Don't put pressure on yourself, it will only lead to more frustration. Practicing kindness to yourself will only improve your writing and your mood for writing. Treat yourself regularly to breaks, make a tea or coffee maybe even have a snack and then carry on at your pace. The creative process isn't a race. You are a great writer and with plenty time and effort you will get where you want to be. Exercise patience and be positive that you will write with ease again because it will happen.
